Sub-topic:- Definition and Aims of Advertising.
Behavioral objective:- At the end of the lesson, student should be able to (a) define advertisement (b) state the aims and objectives of advertisement.

Content Element:-
Advertising may be defined as a paid form of non-personal commercial means of bringing the existence of new goods and services to the knowledge of the public.
Advertising informs, educate and persuades people to buy the advertised goods and services.

Role of Advertising:
 To introduce new product into the market
 To persuade customers to buy goods
 Creation of demand.
 To educate the people on the use of a product
 It builds a corporate image for a company
 It facilitates sales for a firm and as a result the turnover and profit of a business may be enhanced
 It helps to improve the quality of goods
 Advertising provides information that are needed by the customers.
 It creates large market segment which leads to the development of larger markets
 Through aggressive advertisement the demand on the customers can be maintained.

Evaluation:- (a) what is advertising? (b) state three aims and objectives of advertising.

Assignment:- state and explain five purpose of advertising.

Content Element:-
Types of Advertising:
Persuasive advertising: This appeal to people to buy and use a particular commodity whether they need it or not by making them to understanding that they need them.

Informative advertising: This create awareness about the existence of some commodities and services.

Competitive advertising: This is the form of advertising for goods with close substitutes.

Direct advertising: this form of advertising is directed to a section or class of people that make use of the goods and services advertise.

Indirect advertising: This is the form of advertising not directed to any section or class of people e.g. salt

Mass advertising: in this from of advertising, producers of the same type of commodity come together in order to advertise the product.

Advertising media
Advertising media are means through which information concerning goods and services is conveyed to the audience. The various advertising media available to advertising.

Television: this is one of the most effective ways of advertising commodities because consumer listen to the advertisement and at the same time see the goods and now they use them.

Newspaper: newspaper belongs to print media, newspaper are published daily some weekly or monthly. It has wider national circulation.

Magazines and journal: These are published locally and internally either weekly monthly, quarterly are;
(a) Cinema: this is used in starting the showing of films, mobile cinema vans carry their advertising and films to all nooks and corners of the country.

Hoarding: This is a method of advertising goods on large posters pasted on very large board in some conspicuous position along major roads.
