Content:
Characterization has to do with the presentation, description, representation and analysis of the various characters or cast in a play, novel or poetry. It means the way the author treats his characters. Characters can be static, dynamic, round and flat. Characters are individuals in a play whose actions and interactions make for the development of the play. They feign happiness and sorrow, love and hate as the situations demand.
Analysis of a character
a. Notice what he says
b. What he does
c. Notice the context in which he says or does something
d. It should be noted that he is likely to behave differently in various situations.
e. Notice what other characters say about him.

Evaluation:
1. Define characterization
2. List the points on character analysis.

Content:
Types of character
A. Major character-The story of the novel revolves around him. His activities contribute to the development of the theme(s) of the novel is known as the hero or protagonist.
B. Minor character-They help in the realization of the theme.
C. Round character- The hero plays a central role in a novel and he is presented in such a way that there are many sides to his character
D. Flat character- The presentation of the minor characters without much detail though they contribute in a way to the advancement of the study.
E. Dynamic character- This is when a character experiences some changes that are fundamental in nature with the result that a new personality emerges.
F. Static character- A character whose personality is not altered as in the dynamic character.

Evaluation:
1. What are the types of characters?
2. Explain each of the types of characters.

Homework:
Using Sons and Daughters as a reference point, discuss one Dynamic character and one Flat character.

Content:
Erelu
She is the wife of the king of Owu and mother of Lisabi and Dejumo. They are all victims of the invading forces. she has other female children one of whom was killed too. She was in the vanguard of leading the women of Owu in their moment of despair.
Okunade
He is the head of the allied forces that attacked and defeated Owu after seven years of siege. He was formerly an artist, renowned and blessed by the gods. The seizure of his wife by Owu soldiers and her consequent marriage to Dejumo, the second son of the king of Owu leads Okunade to abandon his trade and join the army. He rises through sheer bravado and bravado and becomes one of the leaders of the allied force. He reclaims his wife after the Owus had been defeated.

Evaluation:
1. Mention some of the characters in the play.

The influence of gods
The influence of the gods in the affairs of men pervades the play. Men are regarded and treated as mere play things in the hands of gods. Lawunmi, the ancestral goddess claims she instigated the Owu people into molesting the Ijebu traders so that the dreaded Ijebu army could attack the city.
The influence of women
The attack on Owu may not have happened or the intensity may not have been high but for Okunade's wife, Iyunloye, who was captured and married to one of the princes of Owu.

Evaluation:
1. Mention some of the themes in the play.
2. Discuss each of the themes mentioned in the class.

Discuss the efforts of the various gods and goddesses in the play.

Anlugbua
Old man, identified as Anlugbua is an ancestral god who was the son of Oba Asunkungbade, the ancestor-founder of Owu Ipole. Lawunmi was his grandmother. He is an honest day.
Gesinde
He is the staff officer of the allied army and special aide to General Okunade. He is an Ijebu officer.
Adeoti
She is the second daughter of Oba Akinjobi and Erelu Afin.
