SUBMISSION TO THE WILL OF GOD
The growing popularity of David after the killing of Goliath from King Saul was to regard David as the greatest threat to his kingship. He made up his mind to eliminate David by all means but God was David’s side when David discovered that Saul was after his life, in order to save his life, he was on the run and almost became a fugitive. The Ziphites exposed David by revealing to Saul that David was hiding at the wilderness. Saul went with three thousand men to the wilderness of Ziph in search of David. In the night David and Abishai went to the cave where Saul and men were sleeping, his army commander and other soldiers surrounded the king, Saul was fast asleep with his head.
Abishai suggested to David that he be allowed to pin Saul to the earth because he felt that it was God who provided such opportunity.
David refused to lay his hand on Saul He said to Abishai it was a great sin to kill the Lord anointed one. Instead, he removed his spear and his jar of water, without being noticed by any of the soldiers, David called on Abner, the commander of Saul’s army, that he failed in his duty and deserved death.
David made Saul to realize God gave him opportunity to kill his enemy (Saul) but he spared him that God will judge between them since he was seeking for his life without cause.
David showed Saul his spear and water bottle to prove to him that David would have killed him if he wanted to. Saul showed remorse over his acts and begged David to returns promising never to hurt him.
DAVID ACCEPTS GOD’S VERDICT
Another aspect of David submission to the will of God was his full acceptance of the death of the child born to him by Bathsheba Uriah’s wife, as deserved punishment from God. David seduced Bathsheba, and put her in the family way. God was not pleased with the action of David and struck the child with sickness while the child was sick, David tasted no food and wept and prayed earnestly. The child died after one week.
When he learn that the child died he stopped mourning, anointed himself and went into the house of the Lord and worshipped, His servants were astonished at his act because while the child was sick, he was mourning, but when the child died, he stopped mourning. David accepted the verdict of God as announced by Nathan the Prophet.
A second son was born to him by Bathsheba and was named Solomon, God loved the boy. Solomon was named Jedidah because God love the boy.
REPENTANCE AND FORGIVENESS
There was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David. As Saul was growing weaker, David grew stronger the weakness of Saul created and opportunity for Abner, the commander of Saul army to grow in authority and influence.
He went into Saint’s concubine this act was challenged by Ishbosheth, the surviving son of Saul Abner got angry and promised to transfer the throne of Israel from the house of Saul to the house of David.
Abner went and make covenant with David so as to transfer the kingdom to David but David asked Abner to return his wife Michal, Saul’s daughter, who was his first wife.
Michal was taken from her husband Patiel and return to David. Abner went to the elders in Israel and urge them to accept David as long that it was Divine plan of God.
David later made feast for Abner and sent him away in peace, but Jacob the captain of David’s army just coming from a raid hear at of Abner visit to King David, sent messengers to bring him back without the knowledge of David.
Earlier on Abner killed the brother of Joab in the battle orbean ????. Joab called Abner back and killed him because he killed his brother when David heard he mourned the death of Abner.

This resulted in Judah becoming a vassal of Egypt, Jeholakim become a vassal king over Judah, Egypt was later defeated by Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar making Judah the vassal of Babylon. Jeholakim revolted againsted Babylon contrary to the advice of prophet Jeremiah for the prophet saw Babylon as an instrument of divine corrective punishment for Judah. Jeholakim's revoit made Babylon to invade Judah, Jeholakim died during the struggle, Jeholakim his son became the king.

God used Babylon invasion to punish the people of Judah and their king for their sin, Syria, Moab and Amnon used the advantage of the invasion to attack Judah. Nebuchadnezzar exited all the leading people in Judah to Babylon including the king Jeholachi, all his family members, the mighty men of valour, the crafts man and some prophet like prophet Ezekiel. All the previous vessel of gold in Jerusalem temple were carried to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar to the house of his god. This is the period of the first deportation or the first Zebekiah, Jeholachi's uncle a vassal king over Judah.

ZEDEKIAH'S REVOLT 2ND EXILE AND DESTRUCTION OF THE TEMPLE.
Zedekiah revolted against Babylon. This made Judah to be invade the second time. Nebuchadnezzar, this time they lad sige to the city Jerusalem. There were severe famine in Judah because of it. When the king tried to escape, he was caught by the army of the choldness, he was taken to Nebuchadnezzar. There his two sons were killed and Zedekiah himself had his two eyes gouged out. He was bound with letters and exile to Babylon. More people were also exiled to Babylon except the poorest in the city were exiled.

The temple and walls of Jerusalem were destroyed and the city of Jerusalem was burnt and the city was left in ruins. God allowed all these to punish the people of Judah and their leaders for their sins. This is refer to as the period of second deportation or second exile.

CONDITION OF THE STATE (Neh 1 vs 1 - 11, 2 vs 9 - 20, Ezra 1 vs 1 - 11)
Nehemiah, a jew serving in Susa capital of the Persian empire received news of the pathetic state of Judah from Hannah. He told Nehemiah who was the king cup bearer that:
1) The Surnoors were in great trouble and shame.
2) The wall of Jerusalem was broken down
3) The gates were destroyed by fire. This news made Nehemiah sad, because he was concerned greatly about the situation of Judah. He obtained permission to go and help the Jews rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. He prayed unto God before asking the king for favour. His request was granted, he obtained permission, authority and support, then he set off for the work.

RESPONSE TO THE STATE OF THE NATION
God directed Cyrus, king of Persia in fulfillment of the prophecy of Jeremiah issued a decree that the Jewish exiles should return to their country and rebuild the Jerusalem Temple. Jews in exile led by Zerubabbel returned to Judah. They were faced with many problems e.g. they located a place to worship, there was also the adulteration of yaweh worship, this was one of the negative effect of the exiles on the Jews.

There was insecurity as the walls of Jerusalem and its gates have been destroyed. However God used men life, Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel, Prophet Haggai, Zachariah to solve their problems of the jews. The enemies of the jews opposed the reconstruction work done by the jews, the people of Zerubbabel worked at building the temple the Samaritans decleared their intention to take part in the work, the jews refused because they wrote letter of petition to the king of Persia thus brought a stop temporality to the works. Eventually the rebuilding of the temple was completed. The temple was dedicated and great offerings were made unto the Lord

Then the people started the celebration of the feast of Passover. Ezra the scribe revived the knowledge of the law and its obedience among the people. Nehemiah helped the jews to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem in the face of opposition from Samballat and Tobiah.
